Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS)
Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) refers to surgical procedures performed through small incisions (often just a few millimeters in size) to access the surgical area, rather than a large abdominal incision. Specialized instruments, including cameras and tools, are inserted through these small openings to perform the various gynecological surgery.
MIGS offers several advantages over traditional open surgery:
Reduced pain: Smaller incisions lead to less pain and discomfort for the patient.
Faster recovery: Patients typically experience a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to normal activities.
Fewer complications: Minimally invasive procedures generally have a lower risk of infection and other complications.
Improved cosmetic results: Smaller incisions result in less noticeable scarring.
Minimal trauma to surrounding tissues
Less blood loss in surgery
MIGS can be used to treat a wide range of gynecological conditions, including:
Benign lesions in the uterus like fibroids, polyps, adhesions.
Pain reducing and fertility enhancing surgeries in Endometriosis
Ovarian cysts both benign and malignant
Advanced tubal surgeries(recanalisation, tuboplasty, fimbrioplasty, cannulation of the cornual end, clipping of the cornu, sterilisation)
Heavy menstrual bleeding: (menorrhagia) evaluation and treatment
Pelvic pain evaluation and treatment
Removal of the uterus, tubes and ovaries.
Ectopic pregnancy
Evaluation of infertility
Fertility enhancing surgeries
Correction of mullerian anomalies in septate and bicornuate uterus
Gynecology cancer surgery
In rare and difficult cases laparoscopic ovum pick up may be needed.
Types of MIGS:
Laparoscopy : Involves using a laparoscope (a thin, telescope-like instrument with a camera) and other instruments inserted through small incisions in the abdomen.
Hysteroscopy : Performed through the vagina and cervix, using a hysteroscope to visualize and treat conditions inside the uterus.
