It is not a routine procedure and is usually performed following an abnormal PAP test or HPV test The clinic has experienced gynecologists and other healthcare professionals trained in performing colposcopy.
What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy involves using a colposcope, a magnifying instrument, to visualize the cervix and surrounding tissues in detail. If abnormalities are detected, a biopsy (tissue sample) may be taken for further examination in a laboratory. The procedure is usually performed in a clinic setting. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix. A vinegar solution (acetic acid) may be applied to the cervix, which helps to highlight abnormal areas. The colposcope magnifies the area, allowing the clinician to examine it. If necessary, a biopsy is taken. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort.
When is Colposcopy Needed?
Colposcopy is typically recommended when:
A Pap smear result is abnormal, indicating potential cervical cell changes.
A human papilloma virus (HPV) test is positive, as certain HPV strains are linked to cervical cancer.
A doctor observes unusual findings during a pelvic exam, which may be suspicious of cervical cancer
